Senior Military Science Instructor, University of Nebraska – Lincoln Army ROTC
Master Sergeant (MSG) Alexander Smith is a native of Flint, Michigan. He enlisted in the United States Army in 2009 out of Hanover Park, Illinois, as a 19D Cavalry Scout.
Throughout his career, MSG Smith has served in positions of increased responsibility, including Scout, Driver, Gunner, Section Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Drill Sergeant, and First Sergeant. His previous assignments include 2nd Infantry Division, South Korea; 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas; 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Germany; 15th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia; and, 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade, Fort Carson, Colorado. MSG Smith has deployed in support of operations in Afghanistan and has participated in overseas missions and training rotations in Hungary, Romania, Finland, and the United Kingdom. He assumed responsibility as the Senior Military Science Instructor for University of Nebraska—Lincoln on 10 January 2026.
MSG Smith’s awards and decorations include Meritorious Unit Commendation, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Army Commendation Medal (5 awards), Army Achievement Medal (5 awards), Korean Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2 awards), North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal (5 awards), German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency, Master Combat Action Badge, Combat Action Badge, Expert Solder Badge, and Drill Sergeant Badge.
MSG Smith’s military education includes Master Leader Course, Combat Advisor Training Course, Joint Firepower Course, Cavalry Leader Course, Master Gunner Common Core, Marksmanship Master Trainer Course, Combatives Level 1&2, Drill Sergeant School, Senior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Basic Leader Course, Combat Lifesaver Course, Visual Tracking School, Medical/Trauma Assessment Course, and Javelin Train the Trainer Course.
MSG Smith earned a Certificate in Auto/Diesel Service Technology from Universal Technical Institute in 2008 and an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from American Military University in 2023.
MSG Smith is married to his wife Elizabeth. They were married in August 2010 and have three children: Julianne (9), Charlotte (8), and Michael (6).
MSG Smith’s hobbies include hiking, camping, shooting, running, swimming, rollerblading, bowling, billiards, and enjoying the outdoors with his family.
