SFC McCoy is from was born in Sylva, NC and graduated from Smoky Mountain High School in 2003. He enlisted in the Army as an 11B in September 2003. SFC McCoy has served in several positions from rifleman to Platoon Sergeant as well as several staff positions from Assistant Operations NCO to Division Land Manager to Operations NCOIC. During his career, SFC McCoy served in the 82nd Airborne Division with 2nd BN 325 AIR, 2nd BN 505th PIR, and Division HQ in the G3, 1st Armored Division with 1st BN 41st Infantry Regiment, and the Brigade S3 for 1st BDE 1st Armored Division. He also served as a Senior Drill Sergeant with 1st BN 34th Infantry Regiment and the Operations NCOIC for 3rd BN 34th Infantry Regiment to currently serving as a Military Science Instructor at University of Nebraska – Lincoln Army SROTC program.

SFC McCoy has served in multiple deployments through his career. While in 2nd BN 325th AIR, he deployed to Operation: Iraqi Freedom on three separate occasions (Dec 2004-Mar 2005, Sep – Dec 2005, December 2006 – February 2008). When he moved to 82nd DIV HQ, he deployed to Operation: Enduring Freedom (May 2009-June 2010). He deployed again to Operation: Enduring Freedom again while assigned to 1st BN 41st INF REG (Jan-Oct 2014). His most recent deployment was a short notice activation to Operation: European Assure, Deter, and Reinforce during his tenure as a Platoon Sergeant in D Co. 2-505th PIR (Feb-July 2022).

SFC McCoy has attended many schools to include OSUT Training, Airborne School, Combat Life Savers Course, Combatives Level 1, Tactical Combatives (Level 2), Warrior Leaders Course (Now Basic Leaders Course), Advance Leaders Course, Drill Sergeant School, Unit Prevention Leaders Course, Senior Leaders Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Foundation Course, OPSEC Program Managers Course, Jumpmaster Course, and Heavy Weapons Leaders Course.

SFC McCoy’s Awards include Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one silver and one bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal with 3 bronze Oak leaf cluster, Iraqi Campaign Ribbon with 3 Campaign stars, Afghanistan Campaign Ribbon with 2 Campaign stars, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Ribbon, Global War on Terror Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Ribbon.

His badges include Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Senior Rated Parachutist Badge, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, Instructor Badge, Driver’s Badge.
